Fiesole: stories of stone masons in the Montececeri park

Fiesole, a town with Etruscan origins even older than Florence, lies on the top of a hill overlooking the Florentine Valley. Easily reachable from Florence even with local transport, Fiesole certainly deserves a visit, for the beauty of its historic centre but also for the story of an old craft which for centuries has been handed down the generations inside that which today is known as the Montececeri Park. We can still see the remains of the quarries from which they extracted the “sky coloured stone”, Pietra Serena, which was then transported down the valley to decorate palaces, churches, tabernacles and much more in the centre of Florence. During this tour I’ll tell you about how this hill has guaranteed the survival of the inhabitants of Fiesole while we cross cypress woods which often let us glimpse magnificent castles and unique panoramas, there’s a legend that says that from up there Leonardo experimented his first flight!
